Abstract

This randomized, double‑blind, placebo‑controlled trial examined the impact of 12 weeks of methandienone (an oral anabolic steroid) on muscle mass, strength, and aerobic capacity in a cohort of male athletes. Participants (n = 60) were assigned to receive either 50 mg/day of methandienone or a matching placebo, alongside standardized resistance training and diet protocols. Primary outcomes included changes in lean body mass assessed via dual‑energy X‑ray absorptiometry (DXA), one‑rep max bench press strength, and VO₂max determined by graded exercise testing. Secondary measures comprised serum hormone levels, liver function tests, and adverse event monitoring.

Results: Methandienone-treated athletes exhibited a mean increase in lean mass of 2.8 ± 1.4 kg versus 0.5 ± 0.9 kg in the placebo group (p &lt
